Hey there, I’m Emmy! I’m a sustainability and lifestyle blogger just trying to navigate my early twenties while helping this beautiful place we call home. I will regularly be posting content about how to live more sustainably, as well as some of my environmental heroes, and what’s up in the news around sustainability.
I decided to create Eco-Friendly with Emmy for all you hustlers out there who want to start living more sustainably but are not sure how.
Not so long ago I learned about the negative impacts humans are having on the planet, wanted to find out how I could help, and had no idea where to start. I looked to google and found bloggers who had completely cut plastic from their life, or were fitting their garbage for the year into mason jars, or lived a completely zero-waste lifestyle. While it was inspiring to see the amazing impact these people had, it made me shy away from pursuing some lifestyle changes because I thought “There is NO WAY I can fit my garbage into a mason jar”.
I decided to join clubs and groups that were passionate about sustainability at Brandeis University, but as far as my own lifestyle improvements it was harder to get started. I slowly began to change the items I bought, the habits I had, and the brands I supported as I had the time and money to do so.
Fast forward a few years and despite the slow-going process I now had a good collection of products that worked for me and the knowledge and experience to make recommendations to others! I graduated in 2019 with a degree in Health Sciences, a collection of sustainable goods, and the goal of becoming a Physician Assistant.
I took a job as a medical assistant to prepare myself for Physician Assistant school and that is when my life really changed. While working in a small medical practice I was shocked by how wasteful it was, and the worst part? It is not even their fault! Products in the medical field are almost all designed for single-use purposes, wrapped in layers of plastic, and I just kept thinking to myself
“It’s 2020, is this the best we can do?”.
I decided to change my career path to pursue sustainability full-time and reduce my footprint on this Earth. Since then I have made many changes to my lifestyle with the aims of helping make the world a healthier place.
But how do we get to the blog?
This summer I was sitting on my couch, absolutely sobbing while watching “Chasing Coral”. Sidenote: if you have not seen this documentary I highly recommend it and have the trailer linked here!! While I sat there questioning my whole life and wondering how I never noticed how beautiful coral is, I thought to myself, “If I could just help one person realize that small sustainability changes are way better than nothing then I could die happy”. (I know what your thinking, “Emmy that seems dramatic”, but I was already in a fragile mental state, forgive me.)
From there Eco-friendly with Emmy was born.
Ultimately, the planet needs our help. Many of us want to do our part but are just not sure how. So here I am. Think of me as your bestie, bud, pal, who wants to talk about sustainability all day, but never judges the ways you implement the suggestions she gives.
I am here to bust up those excuses that we have all told ourselves:
- I don’t have the time to research how to become more sustainable
- I’m balling on an entry-level salary and I don’t have the money to dedicate to this
- I live in an apartment, so it’s just not possible
- I live with roommates, would they be cool with me changing things?
- Etc. etc.
On my site, I seek to show you how it is totally possible to start becoming more sustainable without breaking the bank, a sweat, or making waves in your current living situation. Warning, once you get started it becomes addicting.
So, let’s get started!
